An underwater canyon, and the waves it makes
Nazaré owes its waves to a submarine canyon that runs almost to the shore and focuses the Atlantic swell into one place. Photographing it is mostly a matter of scale — without something recognisable in the frame the water reads as ordinary, so I framed wide enough to keep the headland in for reference.
The Nazaré Canyon is roughly 230km long and drops to over 5,000m, delivering swell to the beach with almost none of the energy lost across a shelf. It produces the largest surfable waves recorded anywhere.
The image is infused into the surface of the metal itself, not printed on top of it. Starlight reads as actual luminance rather than ink, which is why astrophotography belongs on metal.
Care: Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth. No cleaners, no glass spray.
