A doorway framing a town that outlived the empire that built it
The old fortress walls at Silves give you a natural frame if you are willing to shoot from inside the shadow and expose for what is beyond it. I set up under the arch and let the stonework go almost black so the town beyond would read as the subject — the arch becomes a lens rather than a wall.
Silves was the Moorish capital of the Algarve, and its red sandstone castle still commands the town. The stone is the same colour at noon and at sunset; only its intensity changes.
The image is infused into the surface of the metal itself, not printed on top of it. Starlight reads as actual luminance rather than ink, which is why astrophotography belongs on metal.
Care: Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth. No cleaners, no glass spray.
