Twenty thousand tiles, and every one of them tells on the light
São Bento station is a working railway terminal with a history painting wrapped around its concourse in azulejo tile. The difficulty is that tile is glossy and the hall is lit from a skylight, so every surface is a mirror for something. I waited for a gap in the commuters and shot with the light behind me to keep the reflections off the panels.
Porto built its central station around a vast tiled narrative of Portuguese history. Passengers walk through it daily without stopping, which is the most Portuguese thing about it.
The image is infused into the surface of the metal itself, not printed on top of it. Starlight reads as actual luminance rather than ink, which is why astrophotography belongs on metal.
Care: Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth. No cleaners, no glass spray.
