Light arrives here second-hand, bounced off a thousand feet of rock
Inside the narrower sections of Zion you never see the sun — you only see what the walls have done to it. The light comes in at the top and works its way down, picking up the colour of the sandstone on the way, so the shadows glow orange from the reflection rather than from any direct source. I metered for the brightest wall and let the depths fall away.
Zion is a slot cut by water through the Colorado Plateau, and an International Dark Sky Park besides. By day it is a study in reflected light; by night it is one of the darker skies in the American Southwest.
The image is infused into the surface of the metal itself, not printed on top of it. Starlight reads as actual luminance rather than ink, which is why astrophotography belongs on metal.
Care: Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth. No cleaners, no glass spray.
